Hey crew, sorry for the slight delay on getting a piece out this week, I’ve been out of town. In today’s passage, we learn vocabulary related to mobile shopping.
There a few different ways to say “app” in Chinese. Of course, you can refer to the name of the app itself (like Taobao or Weixin), or you can say the English letters “A-P-P” (not “app” like “application”), or you can use the Chinese word for “app”, 应用 (yìngyòng), though I’d argue this is less common.
Key vocab
应用 – yìngyòng – application/app
衣服 – yīfu – clothes
便宜 – piányi – cheap
方便 – fāngbiàn – convenient
商店 – shāngdiàn – store/shop
沙发 – shāfā – sofa
高兴 – gāoxìng – happy
在手机上买东西
我有一个手机。手机里有一个APP(应用)。

Great text! The first line is missing in English. Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you so much for these short stories! As a student dedicated to one day being fluent these are so hopeful. I noticed that you’ve had this website around since 2011 and I only wish I had found it sooner! You’re amazing
Hi Isha, appreciate the kind words, and thank you for reading. This has been online since 2011, but you’ll see there are some years where I updated pretty sporadically. But we’re on a roll now! Next milestone is 300 lessons. Good luck in your studies!
Thank you so much! It is very difficult to find good Chinese reading sites. The sentences even for beginners don’t feel dumbed down, and I feel like I can properly gauge the sentence structure, it’s a blessing to have come across this website. I send my full encouragement to your project!!! I hope it goes very well for you!!!
Just want to add to the above comments, thank you for posting these stories! It’s been really helpful in my studies as of late!
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
