In this short dialogue, Xiaomei and Daming make friends in the library.
Without a doubt, the most important part of this dialogue is right at the end, when Xiaomei asks Daming if they can “加个微信” (jià ge5 wēi xìn), or “add (加) each other on WeChat (微信).” If you ever make a new Chinese friend, it’s very common for one person or the other to offer to add you on WeChat so you can stay in touch. But in Chinese, the phrase “Add you on WeChat” isn’t a word-for-word translation to the English – you don’t, for example, hear people say, “加你在微信上”. Instead, native speakers use the more colloquial, “加个微信.”
